New Fresh St. Market to Open in Kitsilano

A new Fresh St. Market grocery store will open in Vancouver’s Kitsilano area, according to multiple reports.

The new store will be the second Fresh St. Market location in Vancouver and the chain’s ninth overall.

Grocery Business reported that the new store will be located on the ground floor of the Kitsilano Block mixed-use building at the corner of West Fourth Avenue and Macdonald Street. The store will comprise approximately 20,000 square feet; construction is slated to begin in 2025.

The four-storey building is slated to include condominium units and other commercial space.

The project is owned by the Georgia Main Food Group, which also owns the IGA and Meiga grocery store chains. Meiga sells Asian grocery items.

Georgia Main is owned by Vancouver’s famed Louie family, whose interests include London Drugs. The new Fresh St. store is being developed by Richmond-based developer Hathstauwk, which also comes under the Louie ownership umbrella.

The parent company, H.Y. Louie Co., dates back to 1903. H.Y. Louie, launched by Chinese immigrant immigrant farmer and entrepreneur Hok Yat Louie, began as a food wholesale and retail food and farm supplies company.

The firm supplies its drug and grocery chains today. It is headed by H.Y. Louie’s grandson Brandt Louie.
