New Grocery Store Set to Open in Former Toronto Post Office

A historic Toronto landmark is getting a fresh lease on life, as the former Postal Station C at 1117 Queen Street West is set to reopen as a neighbourhood grocery store.

According to the Daily Hive, the Beaux-Arts-style building — originally constructed in 1902 and closed in 2020 — will soon house 1117 Meats & Pantry, a new market from the team behind Grace Meats Market and St. Helen’s Meat Packers.

The space, once slated to be replaced by a condominium development, has been revamped while retaining its original exterior, the Daily Hive reported. Inside, the building has been outfitted with modern shelving, refrigeration, and appliances to serve its new purpose.

“It’s a truly unique food-shopping experience that will deliver quality, variety, and great value,” team member Leslie Bielak told blogTO.

While an official opening date has not yet been announced, signs posted on the building and updates from the store’s Instagram site suggest the launch is imminent. The store is recruiting an assistant manager and full-time and part-time clerks.

The development plans for the site remain under review following a refusal from the city in 2024.

As Connect reported in 2023, a local developer planned to redevelop a former Toronto post office into a multi-residential mixed-use site.

Through Bousfields, Queen Street Post filed a development application with the City of Toronto to build a 29-storey residential tower on top of the former postal station.

Plans had called for the new tower to contain 272 multi-residential units. The retained former two-storey post office building was slated to include unspecified community and commercial spaces.
