Loblaw will open a new Maxi discount-grocery store in the historic former Montreal Forum by year-end 2027, the company announced.

Construction is now underway at the building that served as the home arena of the National Hockey League’s Montreal Canadiens for seven games. The Habs won their 24th and last Cup there in 1993, downing Wayne Gretzky’s Los Kings in five games. The Canadiens stopped playing at the Forum in 1996 before the building was converted into a mixed-use retail real estate asset now anchored by a Cineplex multi-screen movie theatre.

The current construction and fit-out work will set the stage for the new Maxi’s opening at the location at XXX. Spanning approximately 13,000 square feet, the small-concept Maxi is slated to open by year-end 2027.

The project represents a multi-million-dollar investment and is intended to expand grocery options in a rapidly growing area, said Loblaw. Located in a downtown district frequented by residents, workers and students, the store will offer fresh food and grocery products at affordable prices.

The new location is part of Maxi’s strategy to expand access to discount groceries in Montreal urban neighbourhoods. The company said recent store openings on René-Lévesque Boulevard, at Plaza Saint-Hubert and in the Village have demonstrated strong demand for affordable grocery options in central Montreal.

The store will carry more than 6,000 products from Quebec, along with multicultural foods, ready-to-eat meals and natural and organic products. Customers will also have access to the Imbattable and PC Optimum programs.

Loblaw food and pharmacy retailer, operating more than 2,800 locations across the country and employing more than 220,000 full- and part-time workers. Through its grocery, pharmacy and retail banners, the company provides food, healthcare, apparel, financial and wireless services.
