NewCold Getting Set to Open Large Automated Facility in Small Alberta Community

A massive new cold-storage warehouse facility is nearing completion in the small community of Coaldale, Alta.

Dutch logistics firm NewCold is putting the final touches on a $222-million fully automated facility in the Southern Alberta town, The Globe and Mail reports.

The high-tech warehouse, which spans 320,000 square feet and stands 150 feet tall, is expected to begin operations in June. Designed for energy efficiency and automation, it will have the capacity to store up to 56,000 pallets of frozen food and create 50 to 60 permanent high-tech jobs in the area, the Globe reported.

“This [investment] will provide Alberta food producers with streamlined access to export markets, improving supply-chain efficiency and helping them grow their business at home and abroad,” Michael Keeler, the facility’s site manager, told the Globe.

The project is part of a broader vision that includes infrastructure to boost export capabilities.

According to Alberta Farmer Express, NewCold is also backing the construction of a 2.6-kilometre rail spur connecting the facility to the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) network.

Coaldale, a tertiary commercial real estate market of fewer than 10,000 residents, is gaining national attention thanks to NewCold’s investment.

“NewCold’s investment is a game-changer, placing us on the global map for agri-logistics innovation,” Mayor Jack Van Rijn told the Globe.

The Alberta government invested $2.1 million in the project through the Innovation and Growth Fund. The Town of Coaldale expedited the facility’s operations and has provided what the company calls “strategic development support.”

NewCold has indicated that the Coaldale project may be the first of several in the region as the firm explores additional opportunities across Southern Alberta.
