Northland Acquires Two Battery Storage Projects in Poland
Northland Power has purchased full ownership of two large-scale battery-energy storage developments in Poland with a combined capacity of 1.2 gigawatt hours.
Financing and construction are slated to begin in 2026, with total costs estimated at €200 million.
Toronto-based Northland acquired the projects from Greenvolt Power Group for an undisclosed price, widening its footprint in the Polish market. The investment aligns with Poland’s accelerating move away from coal toward cleaner power sources, a shift that is increasing the need for grid-balancing technologies such as battery storage, according to Northland.
The 800-megawatt-hour Mieczysławów project and the Kamionka project (MWh) are both located in western Poland and designed for four-hour storage. Each will receive part of its revenue from 17-year, inflation-indexed capacity contracts, with additional income anticipated from energy trading and ancillary services, said Northland.
Once in service, the facilities will be among the first utility-scale battery storage systems operating in Poland.
Northland president and chief executive officer Christine Healy said the acquisition advances the country’s energy transition while supporting the company’s long-term growth strategy.
