Northland Properties to Grow Denny’s Across Country
Northland Properties plans to expand Denny’s across Canada after acquiring the exclusive Canadian rights to the restaurant chain’s brand.
The Vancouver-based hospitality company has acquired the trademarks, intellectual property and exclusive rights to the Denny’s brand in Canada. The move adds to Northland’s long-standing role as the chain’s Canadian master franchisor, giving it full control of the brand domestically.
Northland said it intends to grow Denny’s presence responsibly nationwide while maintaining stability for franchisees, employees and guests, with a focus on quality dining experiences, innovation and service tailored to Canadian communities.
“Northland has been passionate about the Denny’s brand for decades, and this acquisition reflects our confidence in its future,” said Northland CEO Tom Gagliardi, whose family owns the business.
By securing full rights in Canada, Northland has the flexibility to make decisions that best serve Canadian guests and ensure that the brand continues to thrive in communities across the country,” he added.
“This acquisition represents an exciting opportunity for Northland to accelerate growth and strengthen Denny’s relevance with Canadian guests,” said Alan Howie, president and CEO of Northland Restaurant Group.
“With full brand control in Canada, we can invest meaningfully in menu innovation, restaurant development, and our people, while preserving the heritage that Canadians know and love.”
Northlands, which does business as Denny’s Canada, currently operates 85 restaurants nationwide, including 57 owned by the company and 28 franchised locations. Denny’s Canada employs more than 3,500 people across the country.
As part of the transaction, Northland also took an equity position in Denny’s Inc., the global parent of iconic chain. The company said the investment strengthens its alignment with the brand globally while allowing for Canadian-focused decision-making.
Gagliardia also owns the NHL’s Dallas Stars and many other businesses involved in commercial real estate.
