PBA Buys, Rebrands Three Alberta Hotels
PBA Group has acquired three Alberta hotel properties and will transition to a fully owned-and-operated hospitality model for the first time, the company announced.
Calgary-based PBA said the newly acquired hotels—formerly the Days Inn Calgary Airport, Days Inn Red Deer and Home Inn Express Medicine Hat—will immediately join the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) portfolio under a white-label name, with bookings available through IHG platforms. Following renovations, the properties will be rebranded as Garner by IHG, marking the brand’s first entry into Canada.
PBA Group already has a presence in hospitality through assets including The Dorian Autograph Collection, Courtyard by Marriott, which are both located in Calgary, and Element by Westin Downtown Calgary. The latest deal brings hotel operations and staff fully in-house for the first time.
“This is a meaningful step forward for PBA Group,” said Patricia Phillips, CEO of PBA. “By moving to a fully owned-and-operated model, we’re able to take a more hands-on approach to the guest experience while strengthening our position within Alberta’s hospitality landscape. It also allows us to build internal expertise as we continue to grow and diversify our portfolio.”
The acquisition reflects PBA’s continued investment in the experience economy and its confidence in Alberta’s regional travel and business markets, the company said. The three hotels serve both business and leisure travellers with access to key transportation routes and regional hubs.
Renovations are planned over the coming months, including refreshed guest rooms and updated interiors aimed at enhancing the guest experience. After upgrades, the properties will operate under the Garner banner, offering midscale accommodations focused on convenience, comfort and value.
“This collaboration with IHG and the introduction of the Garner brand in Canada reflects both our growth ambitions and our commitment to delivering strong, consistent guest experiences,” said Phillips. “We see significant opportunity in this segment of the market and are excited to help bring a new offering to Canadian travellers.”
The hotels will remain open during the transition under the Prairie Crest Hotels banner, with full rebranding to Garner Hotels expected in early 2027.
Phillips received a Connect 2024 Canadian Women of the Year Award.
