The firm’s name was coined after John Westeinde, the father of the company’s founder, became known around Ottawa as “Mr. Windmill” for his efforts to get an authentic Dutch windmill constructed in the nation’s capital. The attempt was designed to commemorate the long friendship between Canada and Holland stemming from Canadian soldiers’ liberation of the European company near the end of World War II. At the time of the company’s formation, wind energy had not taken off, so the name Windmill Developments was available.
