  • Alberta Investment Management Corporation has appointed two new members. Jason Montemurro joins the board effective immediately for a term that will expire March 12, 2027. Effective April 21, Joel Hunter becomes a board for a three-year term scheduled to expire April 20, 2027. Hunter is the CEO at oil and gas pipeline firm TC Energy, where he also serves as an executive vice-president. He has held progressively senior positions with TC since joining the company in 1997. Montemurro is the founder and CEO of Montemurro Industries. Previously, he was a partner with Azimuth Capital Management (2007 to 2019) and served as a director of global investment banking for CIBC World Markets in Calgary. He has also worked as a tax attorney with Felesky Flynn LLP and with Deloitte as a manager in its Assurance and Advisory Department. Edmonton-based AIMCo is one of Canada’s largest institutional investment companies with $158 billion of assets under management, including many commercial real estate holdings.
  • As Hunter and Montemurro join the AIMCo board, Sharon Sallows’ and Tom Woods’ terms there will conclude April 21. Sallows and Woods served two and three terms, respectively. Each term spanned three years.
  • Avison Young has promoted Martin Jepil to chief information officer. He is overseeing the full-service commercial real estate firm’s information technology platform and overall virtual architecture. Jepil joined Toronto-based Avison Young in 2021 as executive vice-president of enterprise architecture. In his new role, he will also be responsible for customer relationship manager and robotic process automation in addition to such areas as artificial intelligence which will continue to be priorities in Avison Young’s technology strategy going forward. He will continue to lead enterprise data warehouse management, software-as-a-service operations, master data management, software and data procurement, contract management, and data-risk management. Based in the Greater Toronto Area, Jepil has 28 years of information-technology sector experience.
  • As Connect reported earlier this week, Brookfield Asset Management has appointed Hadley Peer Marshall as its new CFO. Her appointment comes as the Toronto-based company expects to be an active trader later this year, capitalizing on a considerable amount of dry powder amid anticipated interest-rate cuts. Peer Marshall will assume the CFO role May 31. She will succeed Bahir Manios, a longtime Brookfield executive who has served as Brookfield Asset Management’s CFO since the entity was spun out as a publicly tradedcompany from Brookfield Corporation in 2022. Manios, who joined Brookfield, in 2004, is retiring but will remain as CFO until quarterly earnings results are reported at the end of May.
  • Voxtur Analytics has appointed Gary Yeoman as interim chairman of its board. His appointment follows the resignation of Nick Smith, who has resigned to focus on his investment management business, said the company. Smith will remain a supportive Voxtur shareholder. He joined the board at year-end 2022. Yeoman is Voxtur’s CEO. He has served on the board for more than 10 years. He previously served as the company’s executive chairman before being reappointed as CEO in April 2023. Before joining Voxtur, he spent seven years as Toronto-based Altus Group’s CEO from 2005 to 2012. Toronto-based Voxtur is a technology company that aims to create a more transparent and accessible real estate lending ecosystem. The company also operates in the U.S. through an office in Tampa.
  • Long-time real estate lawyer Milton Davis is among the 2024 Law Society of Ontario outstanding achievement award recipients. Davis is a partner with Toronto-based Fogler Rubinoff. In addition to being recognized for their achievements, award recipients are recognized for contributions to their communities. Called to the bar in 1978, Davis has made integral contributions to the development of law in the areas of professional negligence, real estate, mortgages and debtor-creditor relations, said the law society. He has served as counsel in more than 200 reported decisions, at all levels, including the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition, Davis has has lectured and written extensively in the areas of real estate, mortgage remedies, injunctions, civil procedure, evidence and trial advocacy while serving as a generous mentor to junior lawyers and a leader within his firm and the professions. He has also championed the cause of the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies and is a member of Lawyers4Wiesenthal, a group of legal professionals dedicated to countering racism and antisemitism.
  • Shindico employees have garnered four Professional Property Managers Association awards for excellence. Chris Gacek took home resident Manager of the year honours. A 13-year company veteran, this year he became the resident building manager of Shindico’s new 124-unit, Taylor Claire purpose-built apartment building in Winnipeg. Stefan Kostic, received the Long-Term Service Award. Kostic is the on-site building manager at Shindico’s Tiffany Towers complex in Winnipeg. He has been with Shindico for 25 years and is directly responsible for all of the property’s repairs, maintenance, renovations, leasing, and tenant-liaison services. Sandra Sumner received the Principal Member of the Year award. In 2021, Sumner became the Winnipeg-based PPMA’s first female president in 2021. Sumner serves as Shindico’s associate vice-president of property management. She has been with the company since Shindico since 2013. Mohamed Mekkawy captured the PPMA’s Advertising award. Mekkawy serves as Shindico’s marketing director. He specializes in photography and videography, shooting outstanding videos on property and construction updates. He also produces three-dimensional renderings and posts content on all of Shindico’s social media pages. Shindico is a full-service commercial real estate and investment management company. The company also owns and operates SNR Construction, which launched in fall 2023.
