- ATCO has appointed Dawn Farrell and Kelly Koss-Brix to its board of directors, effective immediately. Farrell brings nearly four decades of experience in the energy sector, having held executive roles at Trans Mountain, BC Hydro, and TransAlta. She currently chairs the boards of Trans Mountain and Chemours and is a board member of Portland General Electric. Recognized for her contributions to the business community, Farrell also serves as chancellor of Mount Royal University. Calgary-based ATCO, a global enterprise with approximately 20,000 employees and $26 billion in assets, focuses on meeting critical infrastructure needs in energy, housing, and transportation while advancing sustainability and innovation.
- SIOR Canada has named Katya Shabanova as its office broker of the year for 2024. Shabanova is a senior vice-president at Cushman & Wakefield in Toronto. She has been with C&W for about 13 years, rising from a financial analyst position. Prior to joining the firm, she co-founded her own business.
- Five real estate and construction-related business are among the latest recipients of the Order of Ontario. Rudolph Bratty was recognized for his impact on real estate development. He is a founding partner of Brattys LLP and founder of the Remington Group. His work includes residential communities, commercial properties, and the transformative Downtown Markham project, which revitalized the area with 10,000 residents and 16,000 employees. Nick Di Donato restored such Ontario landmarks as Casa Loma and Liberty Grand into world-reknown venues. In collaboration with the City of Toronto, he created a premium dining and members’ club in Union Station’s east wing. As chief operating officer at the firm now known as Stantec, Karakatsanis has led professional engineering associations at provincial, national, and global levels. She is the first woman president of the International Federation of Consulting Engineering in its 110-year history. Jennifer Suess, the first general counsel at RioCan, founded the Women’s Initiative Network to promote women in commercial real estate. Her charitable efforts have raised more than $20 million for causes like the Hospital for Sick Children, advancing health care access across Canada. Kevin Junor, a retired military captain, has been credited with leadership and advocacy for diversity efforts that have left a lasting impact. As the first Black regimental sergeant major of the Toronto Scottish Regiment, he played a key role in the federal apology to the descendants of No. 2 Construction Battalion, Canada’s historic all-Black battalion.
- Karen Yolevski has joined home-inspection firm Carson Dunlop as CEO. Her appointment was announced late 2024 and she assumer new role January 6. Yolevski resigned from her post as chief operating officer at Toronto-based Royal LePage, where she spent approximately four years. A real estate lawyer by profession, Yolevski has held leadership positions with Stewart Title; the Nationwide Group, where she was president of the company’s home-closing and recovery services business segments; Flexiti Financial and law firm Basman Smith.
- Karmvir Rai has joined CAPREIT as a development associate in Toronto. She moved to CAPREIT after serving for two-and-a-half years as development co-ordinator with Lifetime Developments in Toronto. Rai also served briefly as planning consultant for Cadillac Fairview in the Ontario capital.
- Michael Marcelino has joined Oxford Properties as a property operations supervisor. He moved to Oxford’s Toronto office following 11 years at BGO. During his career, he has also held building operator-related roles with Dream Unlimited, Manulife and Compass.
