  • Beth Tyndall has joined Cadillac Fairview’s board of directors. Tyndall is the chief people officer at CF’s parent, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. Wholly owned by Ontario Teachers’, Toronto-based CF is one of the largest owners, operators, investors and developers of best-in-class office, retail, multi-family residential, industrial and mixed-use properties in North America. The company has $30 billion of commercial real estate assets under management and manages more than 36 million square feet of leasable area. one of Canada’s Ontario Teachers’ wholly owned commercial real estate investment and development. Before joining Ontario Teachers’, Tyndall spent more than a decade at Deloitte, where she held progressively senior roles including national talent leader for the audit, tax and consulting practices. She also worked for many years in the technology sector. She also sits on the boards of the Mental Health Commission of Canada and Amica Senior Lifestyles, an Ontario Teachers’ portfolio company.
  • Jamie McPetrie has been named the new managing director of Avison Young’s Winnipeg office. McPetrie succeeds Wes Schollenberg, who has remained with the company as a senior vice-president. McPetrie has been with Avison Young since 2004, initially joining the firm as an industrial real estate specialist before expanding his client base to include retail and office. As managing director, he will focus on revenue growth while also emphasizing team building and career development. Avison Young announced that Steven Paulus and Paul Douglas have joined McPetrie on the company’s Winnipeg leadership team as principals. Paulus, who joined Avison Young in 2007, specializes in real estate financial strategy. He is one of the few designated accountants in the commercial property sector. As a principal, he will work closely with McPetrie and Douglas to grow the firm while concentrating on strategic oversight and operational execution. Paulus will also continue to help achieve their goals with industrial, retail and investment properties. Douglas, who joined Avison Young in 2020, will focus business development and human resources. Schollenerg served as a principal and Winnipeg managing director.
  • Dianne Watts, a former Surrey, B.C., mayor and MP, has been appointed to EllisDon’s board. She becomes the Toronto-based global construction firm’s ninth board member. Watts has more than three decades of management experience, and diverse expertise in politics, affordable housing, economic growth, and policy development.
  • Elias Vamvakas, a founder of Toronto-based commercial real estate and healthcare private-equity firm Greybrook, has died at the age of 65 following a battle with pancreatic cancer. After immigrating to Canada from Greece as a boy, he went on to build hugely successful individual healthcare companies and Greybrook, which he founded more than 20 years ago and served as chairman and partner until his death. Greybrook’s North American real estate portfolio comprises more than 110 projects and 70 msf of projected density with an estimated completion value of $38 billion. Greybrook’s healthcare holdings include Greenbrook TMS, a leading provider of TMS therapy, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-cleared, non-invasive therapy for the treatment of major depressive disorder and other mental health disorders. The company has more than 130 clinics across the U.S.
  • Law firms Hillenbrand Kozicki LLP and MLT Aikins LLP have announced a merger set to take effect on September 1. Edmonton-based Hillenbrand Kozicki specializes in commercial real estate law. MLT Aikins is a full-service law firm and ranks among the largest in the country with offices in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon and Winnipeg. As part of the merger, David Kozicki will join MLT Aikins as a partner, bringing with him a diverse client base ranging from real estate investors to national restaurant brands. Mark Hillenbrand will join as MLT Aikins as counsel and aid with the transition process until December 2024, when he plans to transition to an in-house counsel role.
