- The Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) is seeking a new president and CEO. Jeff Wending has announced that he will retire in 2025. Wending has spent the past four years at HOOPP’s helm, following a promotion in April 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. He is credited with growing HOOPP’s membership and assets under management. Under his leadership, HOOPP has been chosen as one of Greater Toronto’s Top Employers for the past four years in a row and been commended for its focus on equity, diversity and inclusion. Wending joined HOOPP 26 years ago as a senior portfolio manager before assuming a number of other roles.
- Starlight Investments has partnered with author Jackie Burns on the launch of her new children’s book, Ivan’s Garden of Hope. The book tells the story of a young boy who immigrates to Canada and struggles to adjust to his new life, while his mother misses her family, friends and favourite comfort foods. To boost his mom’s spirits and cure her homesickness, Ivan and his new neighbours at their multi-family rental apartment residence use produce from the property’s community garden to favourite meal for an upcoming potluck. According to Starlight, Ivan’s project blossoms into a “vibrant symbol of hope, reminding his mother and the entire community of the strength found in connection.” Thousands of copies of the book are being given to residents within Starlight rental communities across Canada. Starlight has also gifted copies of the book and gardening kits to families of as part of Mother’s Day festivities and community garden-planting events at its residences. Ana Patankar illustrated the book. Burns is also the author of Condo Kids.
- Devimco raised $400,000 during its recent Evening of Great Visionaries event, held at the mixed-use development firm’s boutique in Montreal. Proceeds will help fund technological advancements at the Jewish General Hospital of Montreal. The event’s sponsors included engineering firm ELEMA, Mathieu Masonry, the Vertigo Roofs and Bush Heritage Management.
- MCAN Mortgage Corporation, which does business as MCAN Financial Group, has appointed Santokh Birk as its new senior vice-president and CFO. Starting October 1, he will join the Toronto-based finance company’s executive leadership team while supporting President and CEO Don Coulter. Birk joins MCAN from Home Trust Company, where he most recently served as senior vice-president of finance and chief accounting officer. Before then, he held held a number of senior roles with HSBC in Canada, the Middle East and the U.S. He has about three decades of finance industry experience.
- Kyle Wilson has joined Colliers as a vice-president and sales representative in Vancouver. During his career, he has specialized in the Vancouver, Burnaby, B.C., North Vancouver and West Vancouver markets. He has advised and represented many national & international clients, including TD Bank, Lordco Auto Parts, Darwin, Hungerford Properties, Peterson Group, Mosaic, Boffo Developments, Cape Group, Bucci Developments and Headwater Projects. Wilson moved to Colliers after spending about 20 years with Cushman & Wakefield in Vancouver.
