Porter Preparing to Open New Montreal Airport Terminal

A new passenger terminal at MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport is set to officially open on June 15, introducing domestic commercial flights to the Montreal South Shore facility for the first time in decades.

Australia’s Macquarie Asset Management and Porter Aviation Holdings, the parent company of Toronto-based Porter Airlines, partnered on the investment. The terminal site is located at St. Hubert airstrip in St. Hubert, Que.

The project, led by YHU Infrastructure Partners (YHU Terminal) in collaboration with MET, is expected to expand air travel options for Greater Montreal passengers while easing congestion at existing airports. Once operational, the terminal will host flights from Porter and Pascan Aviation, offering connections across Canada, with capacity to accommodate additional carriers in the future.

“For Greater Montreal passengers, the opening of the terminal at MET will offer more options for travellers and allow airlines to take advantage of greater airport capacity in the metropolitan region,” said Yanic Roy, President and CEO of MET.

Positioned as a complementary airport within the region, MET aims to mirror global cities that rely on multiple airports to meet demand. The new terminal is expected to focus on direct flights using quieter, more fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft.

The approximately 226,000-square-foot facility has been designed to emphasize efficiency and passenger convenience. It includes nine boarding bridges, a waiting area with 900 seats, and an integrated operating model under YHU Terminal intended to streamline operations and improve responsiveness. Its compact footprint is designed to allow travellers to arrive closer to departure times and move quickly through the airport, according to YHU Terminal.

“We are not simply building an airport terminal; we’re redefining the way people travel in Montreal,” said Charles Roberge, president and CEO of YHU Terminal. “This project is the result of close collaboration with MET – Montreal Metropolitan Airport, and every detail has been designed to offer passengers a seamless, efficient and human experience that meets the expectations of today’s travellers.”

Located about 15 kilometres from downtown Montreal, the airport will be accessible via major roadways and a dedicated METbus shuttle linking the terminal to the Longueuil–Université-de-Sherbrooke metro station. The site also features a 500-metre drop-off zone and three traffic lanes to support vehicle flow, serving more than three million residents across Montreal, Montérégie and the Estrie region.

The terminal’s retail offerings will feature Quebec-based brands, including Bâton Rouge and Café Dépôt, along with a convenience and travel-goods store.

Designed by Scott & Associates and built by PCL Construction, the project began construction in August 2023 and was completed in under three years.

The development follows an extensive consultation process involving government officials, industry stakeholders and community groups. According to a 2024 Léger survey, 77% of respondents support the new terminal, said YHU Terminal.

YHU Infrastructure Partners — the partnership between Porter Aviation Holdings and Macquarie Asset Management — will oversee the terminal’s operations under a long-term lease. MET, a non-profit airport authority established in 2000, continues to manage and develop the broader airport.
