RCMP Launches Greenbelt Investigation
The RCMP is investigating the Ontario government’s scrapped attempt to develop parts of the Greenbelt.
“Following a referral from the Ontario Provincial Police, the RCMP ‘O’ Division’s Sensitive and International Investigations (SII) unit has now launched an investigation into allegations associated to the decision from the Province of Ontario to open parts of the Greenbelt for development,” the RCMP said in a statement Tuesday.
In September, Premier Doug Ford abruptly backtracked on plans to remove parcels of land from the Greenbelt for rental-housing development. He apologized for breaking his promise not to allow development in the protected zone surrounding the Greater Toronto Area.
Ford’s reversal came after Kaleed Rasheed resigned as minister of public and service delivery following provincial Integrity Commissioner David Wake’s investigation of the land removal.
Former housing minister Steve Clark resigned after Wake found that he breached ethics rules and failed to oversee the land-removal process.
