Starlight Breaks Ground on Large BTR Project in U.K.
Starlight Investments has broken ground on a major build-to-rent (BTR) real estate development in Basildon, U.K., near London.
Toronto-based Starlight says the groundbreaking marks a key milestone in the firm’s housing creation strategy.
The three-block mid-rise project will deliver 492 one- and two-bedroom rental suites and 16,000 square feet of revitalized street-level commercial and retail space. The development is part of Basildon’s broader town-centre regeneration masterplan.
“This groundbreaking represents more than just the start of construction – it is a commitment to building vibrant, sustainable communities that meet the evolving needs of U.K. renters,” said Jonnie Milich, head of Starlight’s U.K. residential business.
Amenities will include outdoor terraces, a gym, co-working spaces, and sustainable features such as solar panels, high-efficiency lighting, and EV-charging stations. The project is located near Basildon’s main train station, offering a 35-minute rail link to central London.
“This development marks a major step forward in the regeneration of Basildon Town Centre and provides exactly the kind of high-quality, future-focused housing we want to see in our borough,” said Coun. Gavin Callaghan, Basildon’s council leader.
Starlight is collaborating on the project with local firm Orwell Real Estate after buying the property from the U.K. firm in 2024 as part of three U.K. acquisitions valued at £500 million (C$900 million.)
Currently, Starlight has nine BTR projects across six U.K. markets with the developments totalling 4,000 rental suites.
