Starlight Investments has topped off its new Donvale Commons purpose-built rental project in Toronto.

The infill development, located near Sheppard Avenue East and Don Mills Road on an existing Starlight property, will include a nine-storey apartment building and 48 rental townhome suites across three low-rise blocks. The project will offer a mix of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, along with one- and two-bedroom townhomes, and is designed to expand rental housing supply while making use of underutilized land in an established neighbourhood close to Fairview Mall and Don Mills subway station.

“Infill development is playing an increasingly important role in expanding rental-housing supply,” said Howard Paskowitz, senior vice-president of development and public affairs at Starlight. “The Donvale Commons project demonstrates how we can thoughtfully add new, purpose-built rental homes within existing communities to help address growing housing needs, while continuing to invest for the long term in housing choice, quality and stability.”

Toronto Councillor Shelley Carroll said the project will help address the city’s housing shortage.

“Toronto needs more homes, and we need to keep finding ways to build them in communities that are already well-served by transit, parks, and local amenities,” said Carroll. “It’s encouraging to see Starlight advancing projects like Donvale Commons that will add much-needed rental housing while helping to create complete, connected neighbourhoods. Reaching this construction milestone is an important step forward, and I look forward to seeing the project continue to take shape and welcome new residents to Don Valley North.”

Residents will have access to amenities, including a rooftop terrace, fitness centre, party room, games rooms and co-working space. Future phases will add features such as a pet spa, parcel room, dog run and additional landscaped outdoor areas. The development will also include upgrades benefitting the property’s existing 221-suite rental building, including enhanced playgrounds, seating areas and other site improvements.

Donvale Commons is one of several Ontario infill rental projects underway or recently completed by Starlight. The recent completions include The Shoreview in Barrie and Ledbury Park Towns in Toronto, while 557 The West Mall in Etobicoke remains under construction. Upon completion, Donvale Commons will contribute to Starlight’s broader pipeline of thousands of new purpose-built rental suites planned over the coming decade, said the Toronto-based company.
