Svante Opens World’s First Carbon-capture Filter Gigafactory in Burnaby
Svante has officially opened what it calls the world’s first carbon-capture filter manufacturing facility of its kind.
The new gigafactory, known as the Redwood facility, is located in Burnaby, B.C., and is expected to produce enough filter modules to capture up to 10 million tonnes of carbon-dioxide annually by 2030.
The facility spans 140,000 square feet and will serve as the company’s global headquarters, housing about 200 employees. It is intended to support Svante’s commercial-scale carbon-capture and removal projects in heavy-emitting industries, including cement, steel, hydrogen, and pulp and paper.
“This gigafactory is a critical step forward in building the infrastructure necessary to scale up the carbon management industry and to build a marketplace for physical [carbon dioxide],” said Claude Letourneau, president and CEO of Svante.
The facility’s launch comes as demand grows for carbon-capture solutions across North America and globally amid a trade war between the U.S. and Canada.
“We’re also proud to launch this transformative manufacturing facility in Canada, which allows us to bring the supply chain to our shores and bring carbon-management solutions closer to the needs of emitting industries in North America,” said Letourneau.
The federal government invested $25 million in the facility’s construction through the Strategic Innovation Fund. Ottawa also provided support through the Canadian Growth Fund.
In addition, Svante’s project received a US $145-million capital investment. The facility’s other investors, include Chevron New Energies, Temasek, M&G, United Airlines Ventures, Samsung and GE Vernova.
Svante’s technology powers several major carbon-capture power projects operated by Chevron, Lafarge Holcim and Climeworks in Canada and the U.S.
Svante anticipates the need for additional gigafactories similar to Redwood in the next decade as global carbon-management market demand increases.
