Tetrault Acquires Video Games Retailer GameStop
Stephan Tetrault, a prominent French-Canadian entrepreneur, has acquired video games retailer GameStop Canada from GameStop Global Holdings.
Tetrault is known for his long-standing presence in the collectibles and entertainment industry. He is the founder of Imports Dragon, a toy manufacturer based in the Montreal area. He is also the co-owner of American action-figure maker McFarlane Toys, founded by Canadian entrepreneur Todd McFarlane, and in March became a partner at Canadian toy store operator Mastermind Toys.
Financial terms were not disclosed. A market leader, GameStop operates 185 shores across the country.
The acquisition signals a fresh start for the retailer, which will return to its roots by rebranding under the previously used name of EB Games Canada. The rebrand aims to reignite nostalgia among Canadian gamers while modernizing the retail experience for today’s gaming and pop culture communities, said GameStop in a news release.
“This isn’t just a business decision—it’s about bringing something back that Canadians truly loved,” said Tetrault, who will serve as owner and CEO of the revitalized chain in Canada. “We’re going to build something special here, with community, nostalgia, and innovation at its heart.”
GameStop Canada, which had adopted its current name in 2021, will undergo a national transformation over the coming months, said the company. The relaunch includes updated store signage, a redesigned website, refreshed digital branding, and in-store changes meant to enhance the overall customer experience.
“We want EB Games Canada to be more than a store—we want it to be the hub for gaming and fandom culture across Canada,” said Jim Tyo, president of GameStop Canada. “This is about passion, and that’s what’s going to drive every decision we make.”
Planned upgrades include enhanced in-store events, broader product offerings, deeper partnerships with pop culture brands, and a renewed focus on the Canadian market and its community of gamers and collectors.
