TransLink to Receive Largest Share of $1.6B in Federal Infrastructure Funds
TransLink will receive the largest share of $1.6 billion of federal infrastructure funds to be invested in B.C. over the next five years.
But TransLink has issued a statement saying that the money is not sufficient to fill its funding gap, the Vancouver Sun reported.
Ottawa, the B.C. government and Union of BC Municipalities announced that TransLink will receive $825.3 million of the $1.6 billion being awarded to local governments over the next five years. In 2024-25, local governments will receive a total of $300 million.
The federal government is providing investment through the Canada Community-Building Fund.
TransLink serves as southern British Columbia’s transportation authority. Its services include the SkyTrain rapid-transit system and the Coast Mountain Bus Company.
The federal investment comes after TransLink recently issued a report saying that it would reduce its budget by $90 million per year to address funding shortfalls. According to the report, TransLink faces a funding gap of $600 million per year beginning in 2026, when provincial pandemic-relief funds are no longer available.
