Truman, Marriott to Bring Three New Hotels to Calgary

Truman and Marriott International have unveiled plans to open three new hotels in Calgary as part of a $1.47-billion investment.

The projects include the 69-storey W Calgary, 62-storey JW Marriott Calgary, and an Autograph Collection Hotel at Stampede Park.

Truman and joint-venture partner Louson will lead the three-hotel development project. Mariott will manage and operate the hotels.

Truman, Calgary Stampede Board and city officials previously announced plans for the hotel at Stampede Park, but Marriott had not yet been confirmed as the hotel manager. The Stampede grounds hotel will be named later and under the Autograph Collection Hotels label.

The W Calgary, JW Marriott Calgary, and Stampede Park hotels are scheduled to open in 2028, 2029, and 2030 respectively. Truman acquired the Stampede Park property, located in the Weadickville area, as part of a land swap with the city, which will use its parcel as part of a new arena for the NHL’s Calgary Flames and other major teams that will call it home.

If all goes according to plan, W Calgary and JW Marriott Calgary will rise on a site adjacent to the Stampede Grounds at 15th Avenue S.E. and Macleod Trail S.E.

Those two buildings are expected to become two of Western Canada’s tallest residential towers. W Calgary will feature 157 guest rooms, including 27 suites, along with 239 branded residences, a rooftop bar, a spa, a specialty restaurant, and about 16,000 square feet of meeting space. JW Marriott Calgary will include 248 guest rooms and 120 branded residences, 32,500 sf of meeting space, an indoor-outdoor pool, curated retail, and a JW Garden.

“Truman and Louson, as Calgary-based and family-owned companies, have a deep commitment to this city, and we believe this project will be a significant catalyst for the local economy,” said Tony Trutina, Truman’s chief operating officer. “Beyond creating numerous construction jobs, these hotels are expected to generate substantial long-term employment opportunities, boost tourism, and support local businesses through increased visitor spending.”

The $330-million Autograph Collection Hotel, developed in partnership with the Calgary Stampede, will include 320 guest rooms, a rooftop lounge, 14,000 sf of food-and-beverage options, and 15,000 sf of meeting and event space.

“We are thrilled to work with Marriott on the Autograph Collection Hotel on Stampede Park,” adds Joel Cowley, CEO of the Calgary Stampede. “With the growing demand for meetings and conventions at the expanded BMO Centre and across Calgary, these three hotel offerings dramatically elevate our competitive advantage as a host city and complement the Calgary Stampede’s world-known exceptional Western hospitality.”

Together, the three hotels will offer more than 700 premium and luxury rooms and nearly 360 branded residences. The projects are expected to create approximately 9,100 construction jobs and more than 2,000 ongoing operational roles. Truman projects annual contributions of over $120 million in GDP from hotel operations and $111 million from visitor spending.

Truman is a developer and builder with more than 40 years of experience creating residential and mixed-use communities across the region. Louson has been involved in real estate acquisition and development for more than 80 years.
