Truman Starts Construction on New Stampede Park Hotel

Truman has broken ground on a new $330-million convention-hotel project on the Calgary Stampede grounds.

The 320-room Marriott Autograph Collection development will become the first hotel at historic Stampede Park, located just off downtown. Slated for completion in 2028, the hotel will cater to people attending conferences at the expanded BMO Centre also located on the Stampede grounds.

Truman is collaborating on the project with the CalgaryStampede, city-owned Calgary Municipal Land Corporation and Marriott International, which will manage the 13-storey hotel.

Truman acquired an 85,000-square-foot land parcel for the hotel from CMLC in 2025 through a land swap. The city will use the parcel that it received from Truman as part of a new arena for the NHL’s Calgary Flames and other major teams that will call it home.

The future hotel is slated to include approximately, 15,000 square feet of meeting and ballroom space and 14,000 sf of food and beverage offerings, including restaurants, a lobby bar, coffee shop and rooftop lounge. Other planned features include a south-facing leisure terrace with an activity pool, jacuzzi and an outdoor bar; and an indoor swimming pool and fitness club.

“Just seven short months after announcing Truman’s investment, we are thrilled to see construction begin on the Autograph Collection hotel on Stampede Park,” said Kate Thompson, CMLC’s president and CEO, told reporters. “Truman’s $330M investment in this first hotel on Stampede Park and in the Culture + Entertainment District, and the speed with which all parties acted to prepare the site for construction, speak not only to industry confidence in our shared vision for the district but also the significance of the demand for these hotel rooms.”

Joel Cowley, the Stampede’s CEO, said the hotel marks an important next step in building on the expanded BMO Centre and will strengthen Calgary as a world-class destination for conventions, meetings and events.

“Having a hotel of this calibre just steps away from the BMO Centre will enhance the hospitality we are able to offer delegates and make Calgary more competitive in securing major conventions and events, which will result in greater economic impact being generated for Calgarians and Albertans,” he said.

The Autograph Collection is one of three hotels at and near Stampede Park on which Truman, joint-venture partner Louson and Marriott are partnering as part of a $1.47-billion investment.

The other two, branded as W Calgary and JW Marriott Calgary, will rise on a site adjacent to the Stampede grounds at 15th Avenue S.E. and Macleod Trail S.E. and are slated to open in 2029 and 2030, respectively. The two proposed venues are going through the regulatory-approval process.

“With the expanded BMO Centre opening in 2024, Calgary has become an incredibly fast-growing market for the hotel industry, and we are delighted to work with Truman, the Calgary Stampede and CMLC to bring these three elevated hotel experiences to Calgary,” said Tim Reardon, Mariott Interional’s regional vice-president for Western Canada.
