Two Largest Shopping Centres in St. John on Market

The two largest malls in St. John, N.B., are up for sale.

Primaris REIT is selling McAllister Place mall and, according to multiple reports, Slate Office REIT is looking to divest Brunswick Square.

“McAllister Place has been listed through a process, a public process with brokers,” said Alex Avery, CEO of Primaris, during a recent conference call.

Avery said McAllister Place is included among several potential dispositions and acquisitions being discussed with various buyers and sellers.

Brunswick Square appears to be caught up in the Canadian office and hospitality real estate markets’ struggles. Both sectors were decimated by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The mall is part of a mixed-use building that includes office and hotel spaces.

Brunswick Square contains a food court and a small handful of vendors, including Lawtons Drugs, which is the retailer at the site, according to CBC.

“It hasn’t been great news in quite a while,” Deputy Mayor John MacKenzie told CBC.

“At one point when it was first built, it was full, it was driving a lot of restaurants in there, including McDonald’s…It just sort of went downhill over a period of time.”

On the other hand, he told CBC, McAllister Place is “thriving.”
