Walmart Becomes First Tenant in Taza Park West
Walmart has become the first major anchor tenant in the Calgary area’s massive Taza Park West development.
The lease marks a significant step forward for the 1,200-acre project led by Taza Development, a joint-venture between the Tsuut’ina Nation and real estate investment and development firm Canderel. The development site is part of the broader Taza Park community, a master-planned project located on Tsuut’ina Nation land just outside Calgary’s southwestern edge. The community is connected to the city’s transportation network via the Southwest Calgary Ring Road.
A new Walmart Supercentre store is scheduled to open in 2027, near the intersection of Glenmore Trail and Tsuut’ina Trail. The outlet will provide groceries, general merchandise and everyday items for nearby neighbourhoods.
As the project’s first large-scale retail commitment, the store signals increasing traction behind efforts to build out a mixed-use urban district, said Taza Development. According to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada, the store will span 142,729 square feet.
“The arrival of Walmart Canada represents a major milestone in the realization of our shared vision for Taza,” said James Robertson, the company’s president. “It affirms the strength of our partnership with Tsuut’ina Nation and the momentum we’ve built together.”
Walmart’s store is part of the global retail giant’s $6.5-billion Canadian expansion program rolling out over the next five years.
“We’re looking forward to bringing local jobs and everyday low prices to this community,” said Paula Bonner, Walmart Canada’s vice-president of format development.
Site preparations are expected to begin this fall, with construction of the store slated for 2026. The retail project is expected to generate employment during both the construction and long-term operations, benefiting residents of Tsuut’ina Nation and the wider Calgary area, said Taza Development. The company said leasing activity continues to grow, with more than 50 businesses already operating across Taza Park and Buffalo Run and new homes taking shape from several regional builders, including Brookfield Residential, Crystal Creek Homes, and Homes by Avi.
Taza Park is one of three linked villages within the Taza community. Taza Development is overseeing the long-term project, which aims to drive economic growth and support cultural placemaking over the coming decades.
