Walmart Closing Two Montreal Stores
Walmart Canada is closing two Montreal locations as part of a broader review of its store network.
The retailer has publicly confirmed that it will shut its Côte-des-Neiges store on June 19, followed by its Pointe-aux-Trembles location on June 26.
The company said all affected employees will be offered opportunities to transfer to nearby stores.
The closures come as Walmart continues to evaluate its operations to better align with shifting consumer demand.
“We’re always focused on how to best serve our customers, including evaluating our store footprint and formats across the country,” the company said in a statement to CBC.
Despite the shutdowns, Walmart has said it remains committed to Quebec and plans to invest more than $150 million in the province during the current fiscal year. The investment includes opening a relocated store in Sherbrooke, Que., and renovating 18 existing locations.
These provincial plans form part of a broader $6.5-billion investment in Walmart’s Canadian store and supply-chain network. The company says the investment its largest since entering Canada three decades ago.
Walmart has operated in Quebec since 1994 and currently employs more than 12,000 people across more than 70 stores in the province.
