West Van Council Approves Plan for Village with Homes for 7,000 People
West Vancouver council has granted final approval to the Cypress Village mixed-use project that will include the development of new homes for about 7,000 people.
Located near the Cypress Bowl ski slopes on Cypress Bowl Road, the mountainside mixed-use project will include 3,711 multi-residential units and hundreds of acres of parkland and commercial spaces.
The commercial component will include offices, restaurants and other retail units, along with space for services. A community centre, childcare facilities, sports fields, parks and plazas will also be part of the mix.
The project passed second and third reading in the summer of 2024 but came up for final adoption now that all conditions have been met.
In a rare move, three councillors reopened debate on the project, expressing concerns about costs to the district, the North Shore News reported. The district faces costs tied to the acquisition of the formerly private 262-acre Eagleridge lands.
Despite the councillors’ concerns, final approval was granted recently by a 4-3 vote in favour of the deal, according to the North Shore News.
West Vancouver-based British Pacific Properties will construct the project.
“This is a monumental step for British Pacific Properties and for the future of West Vancouver,” Geoff Croll, president of BPP, said in a news release according to multiple reports. “The Cypress Village and Eagleridge plan represents a commitment to creating a walkable, environmentally conscious, mountain-side community that provides much needed housing and amenities while preserving significant natural areas.”
The “legacy project” will benefit the community for decades to come, he added.
