- Maryse Bertrand has been appointed chair of the Public Sector Pension Plan Investment Board (PSP.) She joined the board in 2018. Former chair Martin Glynn will remain a board director until a new director is appointed. A lawyer by profession, Bertrand currently chairs McGill University’s board of governors and sits on the board of retailer Metro Inc. PSP is one of Canada’s largest pension investors with $264.9 billion of assets under management.
- Alex Miller will become president and CEO of Couche-Tard on September 6, the company has announced. Miller will be promoted from his chief operating officer position. He will succeed Brian Hannasch, who is retiring his president, CEO and board positions. Hannasch will continue as a special advisor to both Miller and Alain Bouchar, Couche-Tard’s founder and executive chairman of the board. Montreal-based Couche-Tard develops, owns and operates convenience stores and fuel stations in 31 countries. The firm operates the retail outlets under the Couche-Tard and Circle-K banners, among others.
- U.S. commercial real estate market analytics firm Green Street has expanded into Canada. In conjunction with the move, Gaurav Mathur has been appointed as the company’s head of Canadian research. Based into Toronto, Mathur has held research leadership positions with a number of Canadian firms. He moved to Green Street from Laurentian Bank Securities, where he served a director of equity research for REITs and real estate.
- Green Street has appointed a number of veteran Canadian journalists as part of its expansion into Canada. They are slated to write for Green Street News. The reporters and their coverage areas are: Jenna Cocullo (Montreal/Quebec all sectors); Zoe Demarco (Toronto Office & Hotels); Rahul Gupta (Toronto Industrial, Data Centres & Self-Storage); Laura Hanrahan (Toronto Multi-family & Retail), Matt Lamers (Toronto Financing & Industrial), and Jeremy Nuttall (Vancouver, Calgary & Edmonton; all sectors).
- LaSalle has appointed Michael Fraidakis as its head of alternative investment strategies and chief investment officer for Canada. He will lead the company’s existing value-add fund series in Canada and play a primary role developing new investment strategies and capital raises. Fraidakis moved to LaSalle from BGO, where he was most recently managing director and head of Canadian investments. He has 27 years of multi-functional experience across all asset classes and Canadian markets. During his career, he has complete about $20 billion of transactions.
- Gavin Gong has been named director of investments at Mantella Corporation. Gong will play a key role in acquiring new industrial real estate assets and development projects. He will focus his activities on the Greater Toronto Area. A long-time industry veteran, he most recently served as manager of acquisitions and analysis at Berkshire Axis Development Corporation, where he was responsible for acquisitions, related financing and strategy assessments. Previously, he held positions with PwC Canada and Forgestone Capital in real estate acquisitions, asset management, consulting and reporting.
