  • Nicola Wealth Management has appointed Martine Cunliffe and Robert Gareau to its wealth advisory team. Cunliffe will serve as a wealth advisor and client relationship manager in Nicola’s Vancouver office. A 25-year investment industry veteran, she joins Nicola from CIBC, where she served as a senior investment counsellor and portfolio manager. Gareau will be based in Nicola’s new Victoria office, also serving as a wealth advisor and client relationship manager. He brings about two decades of financial services industry experience to the company, most recently with CIBC in Victoria. Based in Vancouver, Nicola is an independent wealth management firm dedicated to serving the complex needs of high-net-worth individuals, families and institutions. An active commercial real estate investor, Nicola manages $14.2 billion in assets for clients across Canada.
  • ZGF Architects, Fast+Epp, EllisDon and Lafarge have co-published a new, free low-carbon concrete guide. “Concrete: A Pragmatic Approach to Lowering Embodied Carbon” provides strategies on how to reduce concrete’s effects on construction without increasing expenses.   • Britainny Hari captured the Rising Star accolade as CREW Vancouver presented its annual awards. Hari is the principal and CEO of Dual Agency. She is active in CREW’s education outreach committee and co-leads the Vancouver University Crew (UCREW) chapter. Meanwhile, Cindy McMillan took home the Woman of Influence award. McMillan serves as a vice-president of investment with Grosvenor. Susan McLaurin, chief communications officer for QuadReal Property Group, received the Catalyst award. Hendrik Zessel, vice-president of Cushman & Wakefield Equity, Debt and Structured Finance Canada, received the Tribute award. Zessel has been heavily involved with Crew Vancouver since its inception in 2005. He was honoured for being instrumental in supporting the growth of women in the commercial real estate industry. Jenna Macdonalc, marketing and sales manager for Strand, was presented with the Excellence in Service award.
  • Veteran Edmonton-based commercial property manager Angel (Grover) Vara has joined York Realty Inc. She moves to York after spending about seven years with Canderel Management (West). Before moving to Canderel, managed liquor stores in Canada and the U.S. for the company now known as Alcanna. Prior to becoming a property manager, she specialized in retail leasing in Vancouver with Morguard and Avison Young
  • Fiera Capital has appointed Eric Roberts as the head of its U.S. subsidiary. Roberts will serve as executive-director and CEO with Fiera USA. He will be based in Boston and have a regular presence in the company’s New York and Dayton, Ohio offices. Roberts brings more than 25 of years of asset management industry experience to Fiera. The Montreal-based firm holds $164.2 billion in assets under management.
  • David Shaw will become chair of bedroom furniture retailer Sleep Country’s board \when directors meet on November 9, the company announced. Meanwhile, Zabeen Hirji has resigned from the board to pursue other business and personal endeavours. Shaw is currently a board member with Sleep Country,. He also chairs Axsium Group and serves as a director and trustee with Ocean Capital. He was previously the founder and CEO of Knightsbridge Human Capital Solutions.
  • Effective November 1, Dan Barclay will retire from his post as CEO of BMO Capital Markets and become a senior advisor to his replacement, the bank announced. Barclay has spent two decades with BMO and has 31 years of investment banking experience. Wall Street veteran Alan Tannenbaum will succeed him after holding multiple leadership roles at BMO. Tannenbaum will be based in New York.
  • As Connect reported earlier this week, Northwest Healthcare Properties REIT has appointed Craig Mitchell as its permanent CEO after he had served in an interim capacity. And, Michael Caracciolo was tagged to lead Ivanhoé Cambridge’s New York office as the Montreal-based global investor opened its first U.S. location.
