Alta Canada’s Geller Steps Up to Buy Former Miséricorde Hospital in Downtown Montreal

Company:

Alta Canada

In the summer of 2025, Richard Geller’s firm Alta Canada completed the acquisition of the former Miséricorde hospital site in downtown Montreal for a major mixed-use redevelopment project.

Geller, who is in his early 30s, purchased the large-scale property from the Quebec government through its Société québécoise des infrastructures (SQI). He stepped up to redevelop the site after some investors shied away due to concerns about red tape and other issues, according to a published report.

Alta’s first project at the site will be a 30-plus-storey rental-housing project with a reported value of $500 million. The entire redevelopment is designed to bring the site that has been dormant since 2012 back to life and reinvigorate the downtown’s eastern area.

Located at 840-890 René Lévesque Boulevard East, the former hospital was built between 1853 and 1940 and last used as a long-term care home before closing.

These are some of the reasons why Richard Geller of Alta Canada was honoured with a Connect Canadian Transactions of the Year Award for completing the acquisition of the former Miséricorde hospital site in Montreal.
